12:1, the new english bible.. before someone who is alienated from god can become a member of gods family of approved servants, he first needs to make a solemn promise to jehovah.
to understand why, imagine a respectable father who shows kind interest in an orphaned youth and wishes to adopt him as a member of his own family.
It has always seemed odd to me that people who adopt a child consider themselves to be mother & father. They are step parents and can never be more. In the UK this has been a problem for passport authorities because so many people are divorcing and remarrying so becoming mother or father to other peoples children.
With so many gay men and women adopting children the difficulty of identifying the status of the parent has become acute. This is particularly so when the mother & father are two gay men.
To accommodate the challenges of our evolving society, the UK authorities have just announced that on all passports both parents and step parents, whether straight or gay, will no longer be listed as mother or father but as Parent 1 & Parent 2. Just think of all the rows over who will get to be parent numero uno.
i've never read any, so i'd like to know everyone's opinion..
Perhaps you need to think this through. I have read the few paragraphs that encyclopaedias contain, outlining the basic tenants and beliefs of the Watchtower Society. They are usually copied from books or websites. For a more real and comprehensive exploration into the world of the Witnesses, how does someone who has never been a Jehovah's Witness find out what being involved with the Watchtower Society is really like.
They can read literature written by the Watchtower Society which will give their own spin on things, or they can pretend to join and experience the ride for themselves. This is something many good journalists and writers do.
The alternative is to talk to people who have given their lives to the organization and left disappointed, or read their books. It has to be remembered that those that left the Watchtower Society did so after extensive research on the history and changing beliefs of the organization, coupled with their own experience.
It is simply not possible to write an objective book about Jehovah's Witnesses without some personal experience or help from those that have that.
this is taken from the reasoning book, page 201. .
jesus said: if the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you.
if you were part of the world, the world would be fond of what is its own.
I think that Jehovah’s Witnesses persecuted and spoken against because people are jealous of their ability to prophecy with such uncanny accuracy.
the jesus figure in the bible, accross almost all christian denominations, is one of redemption for humankind.
the way that jesus accomplishes that redemption, however, differs between them.
according to the gospels god, or god's son, lived a man's life and died as a man in redemption of mankind.
"The way I see it Jesus must have had a wife at some point."
This news to me - who's wife?
ok, i've reviewed the current labels for the active jw people we all know or may not know.... i like borg, that's the funniest one i've heard yet for the wt society as a collective whole.

the following scriptures all taken from john point to the fact that jesus christ is the only saviour of the people on this earth.
there is no mention of organisation or any other form of salvation within this book.
As it happens I am remotely interested.
The book of John is a favourite with many people due to its emphasis on love. Never a bad thing whatever its context in my opinion.
i've never read any, so i'd like to know everyone's opinion..

Opening the Door to Jehovah’s Witnesses
How many times have Jehovah’s Witnesses knocked at your door? Are you aware that there are approaching 6,000,000 active members calling from door to door? They are found in over 200 countries and produce literature in 150 languages. Each year over one billion hours are spent calling on people like you.
To be forewarned is to be forearmed. This book, written by someone who spent the first thirty years of his life as a Jehovah’s Witness, provides a fascinating insight into their beliefs and lifestyle. The many claims of the Watchtower Society - who govern the membership and produce all literature - are examined.
The methods they use to draw people into their religion
What they presently believe
The beliefs they previously held
What is expected of the members
How members are instructed to view outsiders
This easy to read book is a goldmine, for those wanting to avoid the pitfalls along the way in their search for truth.

GoodBookStall Review:
I have read this book carefully, to see for myself how this subject has been handled. I found a very readable book, written by one who had spent a childhood and many adult years working wholeheartedly for the Society, before becoming disillusioned as he found out more about the inner workings of the Watchtower and the Jehovah's Witnesses. His respect for, and belief in the integrity of the ordinary members I found heart-warming, the overall picture, chilling. Theirs is not Christ's message.

still wondering... Thinking of you at this most difficult and painful time.
there is a fringe discussion that pops up now and then regarding jesus' name.
if he joined jwd ( and let's be honest - 'where else would he go?
') what username would he choose because that would cause all sorts of theological threads alone...?.
watersprout I appreciate your well intentioned response.
By the way, your original suggestion -
" Maybe i'm missing something, but what is the purpose of this thread? Other than to mock those who follow Jaheshua..."
- is too long for a username.
ateb Looks like you have pretty well nailed the torture stake/cross theme.
Got any less gruesome ideas for the squeamish among us?
